At Holman Community Development Corporation, our mission is to increase the opportunities for our communities to succeed. Success for our children is a goal we are proud to strive for, but we also understand this means providing guidance through employment and internships so that they can build a better future.
Here are just a few of the reasons why youth job creation is critical for our society.
Jobs Prepare Young Adults for Tomorrow
By having a resume with prior job experience and references, young adults will have more opportunities to pursue their career paths and have a better chance when applying for higher-level positions.
Having a job also teaches them skills that can help with other jobs and areas of life, like time management and finances, and instills a sense of responsibility and discipline.
Jobs Build Confidence
Many of the teens in our programs have faced difficulties in their lives. Whether these difficulties stem from parental divorce, financial troubles, or problems at school, they can have a negative impact on a person’s confidence and ability to succeed.
By providing the young people in our community with internships and temporary jobs, we are giving them the opportunity to learn and develop skills that they can take pride in and show the world their unique talents.
Jobs Keep Young People Safe
Having a job isn’t just a matter of long-term success or developing self-confidence, it is also one of the best ways to protect vulnerable youth from the dangers of gangs, drugs, and violence.
The Justice Policy Institute had declared that skills training and employment opportunities are critical to preventing youth incarcerations.
Incarcerated individuals have also said in multiple interviews that if there had been opportunities for them to learn and succeed in school and at work, they likely would not have turned to crime to survive.
Our responsibility as parents and community members is to prepare our youth for the challenges of tomorrow, and that means providing them a good education and opportunities for employment.
